Halo could be starting over from scratch.

Activision has proposed a total reboot of the series that would leave behind lore built up over 25 years, according to sources cited by YouTuber Rebs Gaming. The details were laid out in a report published on 2 October 2026. GameSpot

Those same sources stressed that nothing is concrete right now. Plans are still shifting, and no final direction has been locked in.

Sledgehammer Games is believed to be at the centre of whatever comes next. The report says the Call of Duty studio is expected to lead development of the next Halo game, with Activision building a team that could sit within Sledgehammer.

That team has already tested ideas. Sledgehammer presented conceptual prototypes, early mock-ups used to explore a concept, for two projects. One was a free-to-play Halo multiplayer game, free to download and supported by in-game purchases. The other was a Halo story campaign built in the Infinity Ward engine, the core software toolkit behind Call of Duty.

The campaign concept was described as a soft reboot. It would not follow the story of Halo Infinite, the 2021 entry in the series, but it would not retcon established canon either. Retcon is short for retroactive continuity, when a story rewrites events it previously treated as fact.

That softer approach may now be off the table. Rebs Gaming reported that Activision has discarded its original project ideas for a full Halo game. A direct sequel to Halo Infinite is seen as unlikely, and at least some of Halo's story is expected to be rebooted.

Some of this lines up with earlier reporting. In August 2026, Eurogamer reported that Sledgehammer had worked on a Halo multiplayer prototype before it was cancelled. Eurogamer

For fans, this means patience. A clean slate sounds dramatic. Right now it is only a proposal, from unnamed sources, with no official plan announced and no release date attached.
