Guadagnino 'not afraid' of backlash ahead of Artificial premiere

Luca Guadagnino says he is “not afraid” of backlash from Sam Altman and the other technology leaders portrayed in his new film Artificial. He spoke ahead of the film’s premiere on Monday in the main lineup of the New York Film Festival, Variety reported on 2 October.
The film centres on Altman’s ousting from OpenAI in 2023 and his quick rehiring. Andrew Garfield plays Altman, Yura Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro plays former chief technology officer Mira Murati and Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk, according to Variety.
Guadagnino said people with a great deal of power should understand their responsibility to the community, he told Variety. He also said he had been “indirectly approached” by some of the people depicted in the film. He did not engage, according to Variety.
Altman has yet to comment publicly on the film, according to Variety. Artificial was picked up by distributor Neon after Amazon MGM dropped it following Amazon’s $50 billion investment in OpenAI, Variety reported.
The festival has programmed Artificial for its world premiere in the Main Slate, the festival’s central selection, of the 64th edition, according to FilmLinc. The 64th festival runs from 25 September to 12 October, according to FilmLinc, with the premiere listed for 5 October at Alice Tully Hall, according to FilmLinc.
Guadagnino also said he would not use artificial intelligence in his own film-making, Variety reported.
What makes this stand out for a general audience is the tight loop. A drama about a boardroom sacking plays in New York while the people it portrays still run the companies in the headlines.
