Individual artists in New York can now get US$10,000 from the city. The amount is double the previous level.

The rise was reported by ARTnews on 2 October 2026. It applies to direct grants for individual artists, separate from the funding that goes to arts groups. That distinction matters. Organisations have staff and box offices. Individuals often do not.

The official behind the change is Diya Vij, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the city agency that handles arts funding. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani appointed her in February 2026, according to an announcement from City Hall. City Hall describes the department as the country's largest municipal funder of culture.

The sums involved are large. New York City's Fiscal Year 2027 budget includes US$323.8 million for the Department of Cultural Affairs, listed by the city as the highest-ever appropriation for arts and culture. As Commissioner, Vij oversees funding for more than 1,000 nonprofit arts and culture organisations across the five boroughs and directs cultural policy for the city.

Vij was also named to the 2026 TIME100 Art list, TIME magazine's selection of influential people in art, as noted by TIME. The listing came in September 2026. It put a city administrator alongside artists, curators and dealers.

What makes this stand out is the focus on people rather than buildings. For working artists, this means cash they can use in a straightforward way. Materials. Rehearsal time. Weeks in the studio to finish new work.
