Pedro Pascal thought Tony Gilroy was going to be difficult. He admitted as much on stage after the world premiere of Behemoth! at the New York Film Festival.

“I thought you were gonna be kinda mean,” Pascal told Gilroy during a Q&A following the screening, according to Deadline. He was wrong. Pascal used the session to praise the writer-director for a drama he described as intimate and healing.

The premiere took place on Friday, October 2, at Alice Tully Hall. Behemoth! was the Centerpiece selection of the 64th New York Film Festival, the gala slot that sits at the heart of the programme, according to FilmLinc. Gilroy attended with Pascal and other cast members.

The Searchlight Pictures film is written and directed by Gilroy. Pascal stars as Alex Serian, a cellist and former child prodigy who returns home to Los Angeles to write music for films and reconnect with his family, according to Deadline.

Pascal drew a playful contrast between that small, personal story and Gilroy’s reputation for intricate plotting. He told Gilroy he had built “this complex Jason Bourne-like puzzle over something that is so intimate and so healing.” Gilroy joined Pascal on stage with co-stars Will Arnett and Eva Victor to discuss the film as the festival’s Centerpiece pick.

The wider ensemble also includes Olivia Wilde, Hank Azaria, Margarita Levieva and Matthew Lillard. Behemoth! is scheduled to open in theatres on December 4, according to Deadline.

What makes this stand out is the tone of the exchange. No awards talk. No box office talk. Just an actor surprised by a collaborator, and keen to say so in front of a festival crowd.
