New York's Kimpton Era hotel hides an ocean liner inside its 529 rooms overlooking Rockefeller Plaza.

New York studio INC Architecture & Design designed the guest rooms to work like staterooms, the private cabins on large passenger ships. Each room folds the bed, desk and storage into a single run of white-oak joinery. The details were published on 3 October 2026. Dezeen

The idea is simple. Space is tight. Everything has its place.

The figure of 529 refers to keys, the industry term for rentable rooms. That makes the Kimpton Era one of the larger new hotels in Midtown Manhattan. It carries the official IHG name Kimpton Era Midtown New York.

The hotel sits in a purpose-built, 33-storey tower at 32 West 48th Street, just south of the Rockefeller Center complex. The address puts guests a short walk from Rockefeller Plaza, its ice rink and its subway station. Rooms look out over the plaza.

The building's architectural design was handled by SLCE Architecture in New York, while INC led the interiors, according to a March report on the opening. HotelDive Extell Hospitality, the hotel arm of New York developer Extell, is listed as the operator.

Inside the rooms, the palette stays soft. Neutral, olive and pastel tones run across textiles and finishes. White oak does the heavy lifting on the walls.

For travellers, this means the room reads as one calm piece of furniture rather than a box of separate bits. The bed sits within the wall unit. The desk pulls forward beside it. Storage closes away behind panelled doors.

What makes this stand out is how literal the ship reference is. Old liner cabins were masters of small-space living. Doors slid. Bunks folded. Every panel worked hard. INC has used the same logic, but with a Midtown palette and warm timber.

Downstairs, the offer is broad. The most recent design account gives five dining venues for the hotel. Older IHG booking pages list four bars and restaurants, but the newer published figure takes precedence.

Practical details help plan a stay. The hotel is listed as pet-friendly and smoke-free, with a fitness centre on site. On-site parking costs US$65 per day, according to IHG. IHG Three room types are offered for booking.

IHG, the hotel group behind the Kimpton brand, opened the Midtown property earlier this year. For a visitor, the pitch is clear. Step out to the plaza. Come back to a cabin.
