Reigning champions Manchester City put a perfect start on the line against an Arsenal side short on goals and wins on Sunday, 4 October 2026.

City welcomed Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium for Round 6 of the Women's Super League, the top flight of women's football in England. Kick-off was 16:30 BST, with live coverage in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event, according to Arsenal's watch guide Arsenal. Adult tickets were priced at £15 Arsenal.

City started the day top of the table. They had won all four league games so far this season as defending champions The Guardian. The club had moved this fixture, along with the home Manchester derby, to the Etihad Stadium for the 2026/27 season Manchester City.

Arsenal arrived in a very different mood. They were eighth at the start of play, already seven points behind City The Guardian. They had scored only twice in four league games and had one win in their previous five matches in all competitions.

The week had brought more frustration in Europe. Arsenal drew away at Paris FC in the Women's Champions League, Europe's top club competition, after giving up a two-goal lead. Manager Renée Slegers said before the City game that she still had the full support of the Arsenal board.

Recent history between these clubs has swung both ways. Arsenal won 1-0 at home in February 2026 through a first-half goal from Olivia Smith Reuters, ending City's 13-match winning run in the league. City still finished as champions, sealing a second WSL title after Arsenal were held 1-1 by Brighton in May.

There was plenty happening elsewhere in the league on the same afternoon. Noelle Maritz put managerless and winless Aston Villa 1-0 up against Crystal Palace with a 56th-minute goal. Alexia Putellas scored twice as London City Lionesses led 3-0 at Spurs at half-time, while Melvine Malard gave Chelsea a half-time lead at West Ham. Brighton led Charlton 3-1 after Seike's 54th-minute strike.

For fans, this means a sharp contrast in pressure. City can stretch a flawless opening and tighten their grip on first place. Arsenal need a performance to steady the season and give their travelling supporters something to carry home.
