Sale Sharks beat Saracens 21-17 in The Prem to claim their first win of the campaign, according to BBC Sport. They led 7-5 at half-time and then held their nerve. It was tight, tough and decided late.

They did it the hard way. Flanker Jacques Vermeulen was sent off in the 18th minute. Referee Joe James showed a 20-minute red card, which means the player stays off for good but the team can bring on a replacement after 20 minutes.

That left Sale short-handed for much of the first half. They had to tackle, cover and keep their shape with 14 men on the field. They reached the break still in front.

The scoring was shared around. Sale's three tries, each worth five points for grounding the ball over the try-line, came from Nathan Jibulu, Tom O'Flaherty and Ben Bamber. Saracens hit back through Eroni Mawi, Sione Va'enuku and Charlie Bracken. Three tries apiece tells you how little separated them.

Sale struck first and stayed just ahead at half-time at 7-5. One score either way would have swung it. The second half stayed just as close, with both sides finding the line again.

Then came the finish. Sale added the decisive points to move to 21. Saracens pushed hard and closed to within four. One more converted try would have stolen it, but Sale's defence stood firm to the final whistle.

What makes this stand out is the timing of the red card. Losing a forward that early usually costs you at the scrum, the set-piece where the two packs push against each other, and around the ruck, the contest for the ball on the ground after a tackle. Players tire faster. Gaps appear wider.

For fans, this means Sale finally have lift-off. An opening win settles nerves. It gives coaches something solid to build on and gives supporters a result to enjoy. For Saracens, it is a narrow home defeat with plenty of effort but not quite enough control when it mattered.

Sale left with the points after defending a four-point lead. After an early sending-off and a one-score game throughout, that took grit.
