Marnus Labuschagne has picked the perfect moment to find runs again. The Australia batter struck 111 from 89 balls against a Cricket South Africa Invitation XI in Potchefstroom, five days before the first Test in Durban The Guardian.

He needed it. Labuschagne reached his hundred in just 76 balls, hit 19 fours and then retired — walked off unbeaten to let a teammate bat, as is normal in a warm-up — to cap Australia's 6-368.

It was his first century in any form of cricket for 11 months. The drought in Tests runs deeper. He has gone three years and 43 Tests without a Test hundred. Former captain Ricky Ponting had described his place in the side as "untenable".

That pressure has followed him all winter. Labuschagne was left out of Australia's one-day squad for the tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa in August, but kept for the three-Test trip to South Africa named in September.

The two-day game at Senwes Park on 3-4 October ended in a draw, with neither side able to force a win. Steve Smith made 61 before also retiring, and Alex Carey added 57. The home side declared on 318-7 — called their innings closed to set up a final chase — after a century from Neil Brand.

For Labuschagne, the ground holds happy memories. He was born in Klerksdorp, less than 50km from Potchefstroom down the N12 highway. He scored his first one-day international hundred for Australia at Senwes Park in 2020. Before this match he hosted teammates for a braai, the South African barbecue, at his family home Cricket Australia.

What makes this stand out is the timing, not just the runs. Australia play their first Test in South Africa since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in Durban on Friday. Batting at No. 3, third in the order and a key early position, Labuschagne now looks set to keep his place for that opener ESPNcricinfo.

For fans new to this contest, this means a familiar face with a point to prove. A warm-up hundred guarantees nothing. But 111 at almost a run a ball, close to home, is the best possible answer.
