Hal Jordan is dead. The “Lanterns” season finale shoots Kyle Chandler’s Green Lantern and leaves Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart standing alone.

The episode is titled “Dirt and Stars.” It is Episode 8 of an eight-episode first season ordered by HBO Max. It became available to stream on HBO Max on 5 October 2026, according to Variety.

Chandler plays veteran pilot Hal Jordan. Pierre plays newcomer John Stewart. Together they are Green Lanterns, emerald-powered officers who police threats across space and Earth.

The wider ensemble features Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Shea Pritchard as her son Noah and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, with Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe Macon and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. The finale picks up after John’s trip away from Earth. It opens with Sinestro grabbing Hal and holding a knife to his neck while he waits for John, according to Forbes.

The trap turns on a family secret. Noah is revealed as the secret second Manhunter, the hidden killer the season has been chasing. When Hal confronts Kerry about Noah’s identity, Kerry shoots and kills Hal.

Noah had earlier freed Sinestro from prison. Sinestro repays him by forging a new yellow ring for the boy. He builds it with fear-inducing gas taken from the planet wiped out by the Manhunters.

John arrives with his own green ring almost depleted. A ring holds limited charge and must be refilled, and Sinestro offers to let John draw power from the yellow lantern instead. A hologram of Hal appears and stops him in time. John refuses the charge and leaves Sinestro marooned on that ruined Manhunter planet.

The ending positions John as Earth’s sole Green Lantern. That status carries straight into DC Studios’ forthcoming “Superman” sequel, “Man of Tomorrow.” Variety reports the finale sets up that handover directly.

HBO had not renewed “Lanterns” when the finale streamed. The show sits on the bubble, meaning a second season is still undecided. That leaves open that “Dirt and Stars” could serve as a series finale, with the eight-episode run listed in HBO Max press materials standing as the full order, according to HBO Max.

For viewers, this means a clean break. One Lantern is gone except as a hologram. One remains to carry the ring.

What makes this stand out is how much the finale closes. Sinestro is exiled. Noah holds a yellow ring. Kerry lives with what she did. John walks on alone.
