Martin Freeman and Jim Broadbent will lead the BBC's Christmas ghost story for this year, The Bride's Chamber. The one-off special adapts a story by Charles Dickens first published in 1858. The casting was reported by Deadline on 5 October 2026.

Freeman and Broadbent sit at the top of a six-person cast. Adrian Scarborough, Joe Armstrong, India Fowler and Lewis Shepherd also appear in the drama. The television adaptation was created by Mark Gatiss. It is the ninth Christmas ghost story special he has made for the BBC.

Filming took place earlier in 2026 at Ingatestone Hall in Essex, England. The hall serves as the central location for the story. That early shoot gives the production time to complete editing and be ready for the festive schedule.

The finished film will air on BBC Two over the festive period. It will also be available on BBC iPlayer, the BBC's streaming service, for viewers who prefer to watch on demand. Adorable Media is producing the special. BBC Studios, the BBC's commercial arm, is handling international distribution, meaning sales to broadcasters and platforms outside the United Kingdom.

Isibeal Ballance is the producer for Adorable Media. Mark Bell is the BBC commissioning editor, the executive who orders the programme for the broadcaster. The producer runs the day-to-day production while the commissioner oversees it for the channel.

The three most recent specials in the series were The Room in the Tower by E.F. Benson, Woman of Stone by E. Nesbit and Lot No. 249 by Arthur Conan Doyle. Each was a single film built from a classic story. The new Dickens adaptation follows the same pattern, with a familiar literary source and a cast led by two widely recognised actors.

What makes this stand out is the slot itself. A ghost story at Christmas has become a regular appointment for the BBC, and the ninth outing keeps that appointment in place.

For viewers, this means one evening to keep free in December. One house, one haunting, and a chance to watch together before the special settles on iPlayer for catch-up. The exact air date has still to be confirmed.
