Side by Side by Sondheim returns to London for 50th anniversary run

Side by Side by Sondheim will return to London this winter in a 50th anniversary staging.
The revival was announced on 5 October 2026 for Upstairs at the Gatehouse. It will play from 10 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. The run covers Christmas, New Year and the first weeks of January.
The anniversary tag looks back half a century. The show premiered in the West End in 1976. The new production is billed as the 50th anniversary staging to mark that history, as reported by WhatsOnStage.
A revival, in theatre language, means a new staging of a show first seen before. This one stays small. It plays a studio-scale London room rather than a large West End house. That shapes everything from design to cast size.
The company has set its press night for 16 December. A press night is the invited performance that critics attend. It comes six days after the first performance on 10 December. The run then continues for just over four weeks into the new year.
Casting is still to come. The company will number four performers. No names have been given yet. That announcement will follow separately.
Amanda Noar directs the production. She leads the creative team and the rehearsal room. Isaac Bernier-Doyle joins as associate director and dramaturg. The first part of that job means supporting the director day to day. The second part focuses on text and structure.
Harry Style is musical director. He takes charge of the music and the singing. Ruby Boswell-Green is set designer. Simon Jackson is lighting designer. Hannah Danson is costume designer.
Three designers. One compact stage. Their work will define how the show looks and moves in a tight space.
The revival is produced by Annlouise Butt by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe). That credit means Butt leads the production under licence from the company that administers the show. Such arrangements are standard for revivals of existing titles.
For audiences, this means a short winter window. Four voices. A Christmas-period booking. Anyone planning to go will need casting and ticket details, including prices and booking fees, which have not yet been published.
The dates are fixed. The team is in place. The cast is next.
