Steve from Minecraft appears to fire a bow inside Elden Ring. He is not really there.

The clip is one of a wave of AI-powered mashup videos spreading on social media, built to make a character from one game look as if they are acting inside another. The run of posts took over X this week, according to IGN. Players and modders have met them with a mix of concern, debate and outright backlash.

The method sounds complex but the result is simple. The videos are made by decompiling two games, breaking their code down into a readable form, using the Claude Opus 5.5 AI tool and running both games at the same time, according to Video Games Chronicle. Elements from one game are then pulled out and overlaid on top of the other. Actions are timed to match, so a move in the first game triggers a matching move in the second.

In the Minecraft and Elden Ring example, firing a bow in Minecraft makes Steve appear to loose an arrow in Elden Ring. Another pairing labelled “wow x waw” mixes World of Warcraft with a Call of Duty: World title, according to Eurogamer. It is an elaborate green-screen trick. No character has actually been moved from one game into the other.

The makers describe the projects as “vibe-coded”, a term for software put together by prompting an AI chatbot rather than writing every line of code by hand. Mods, the fan-made additions and tweaks that change how a game looks or plays, are usually built and tested over weeks or months. These mashups can be assembled much faster.

What makes this stand out is the reaction from inside the modding scene. Some modders use AI tools in their own work and still dislike the trend.

Modder Kran said they use AI tools when modding but called the mashup trend “pure slop”, with nothing creative about it beyond picking two games to put together. Kingdom Hearts modder Discount Mods said they were tempted to stop making mods if low-quality AI mods become the permanent state of modding.

For fans scrolling past, this means a feed full of odd pairings that look playable but are not. The videos present an illusion of crossovers that do not exist as working mods to download and play.
