New Poirot Series Hercule Adds Parkinson, Douglas and Stephens

Three familiar faces are joining a young Hercule Poirot on screen.
Katherine Parkinson, Omari Douglas and Toby Stephens have joined Hercule, the BBC and BritBox origin series about the early life of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective. Their roles are being kept under wraps, according to Deadline, which reported the casting on 5 October 2026.
They are not the only new names. Jessica Alexander, Honor Swinton Byrne, Paul Forman, Arthur Hughes, Ralf Little, River Medway and Natalie Quarry have also joined the ensemble.
Edward Bluemel plays the lead role. He was 33 when his casting was announced. Audiences may recognise him from Killing Eve, My Lady Jane and Sex Education, according to Mammoth Screen.
Hercule is built as an origin story. That means it follows Poirot before he became the famous moustached detective of the novels. The BBC describes the show as an intimate study of Poirot the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars.
The books behind the series are now set. The production will adapt Lord Edgware Dies first. Peril at End House will follow as the second adaptation. Both are classic Poirot mysteries from Christie.
The six-episode series comes from Mammoth Screen. That is the production company making the show. The six-episode order means the story will run across six episodes. It is written by Benji Walters. Jonny Campbell is directing the first two episodes, meaning he sets the visual tone for the opening.
Cameras are already rolling. The series is currently filming in Liverpool. The BBC and BritBox have also shared a first-look image, meaning the first official photo, of Bluemel in character as Poirot.
Fifth Season is handling global distribution. In television terms, that means selling the finished series to broadcasters and platforms outside the UK.
Mammoth Screen announced Bluemel in the role in June 2026, when he was 33. It released the first-look image in August 2026. The latest casting news was reported in October 2026.
For viewers, this means the shape of the new Poirot is becoming clear. A young lead is in place. A large supporting cast is gathering around him. Two familiar mysteries are confirmed. Filming is under way, and two Christie books will reach the screen in a new timeline.
