Ron Howard will collect the Critics Choice Impact Award at the 11th annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards, organisers have announced, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The prize recognises filmmakers whose work, influence and commitment to nonfiction storytelling have made a significant, lasting impact on documentaries. Howard, the Oscar-winning director turned prolific documentary maker, is being honoured in a year when his latest nonfiction feature is the Netflix documentary Avedon, about photographer Richard Avedon.

He will share the honours list with Jehane Noujaim. She will receive the Pennebaker Award, given to filmmakers whose work has made an influential contribution to documentary filmmaking as an art form.

The Pennebaker Award was formerly known as the Lifetime Achievement Award. It is named in honour of D.A. Pennebaker, the veteran documentarian behind films such as Dont Look Back and The War Room.

Noujaim is known for The Square and The Vow, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She also co-directed the HBO docuseries about the Burning Man festival, The Man Will Burn.

Ross Mathews will host the ceremony. It will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8, at New York's Edison Ballroom.

Nominations for this year's awards will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. That list will set the competitive field around the two honorary prizes.

What makes this stand out for viewers is the pairing. Howard arrives from mainstream features and high-profile nonfiction, while Noujaim comes from immersive, long-form documentary work. Both strands will be in the same room in November.
