Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Captain

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as India women's captain in all three international formats. The announcement came on 6 October, ending a leadership run that began in 2012.
The numbers tell the scale of it. She captained India in five Tests, the five-day game, 51 one-day internationals, the 50-over game, and 155 T20 internationals, the shortest 20-over game, according to BBC Sport. Her last match in charge was on 22 September.
That final match ended in gold. India beat Sri Lanka to win a second successive Asian Games title. It closed a busy stretch that also included a one-off Test win against England at Lord's in July.
The headline achievement came in the 50-over World Cup. Kaur led India to their first global title. India had reached the final against South Africa when she first captained at a World Cup, but this time they went one step further.
There was disappointment too. India went out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage. It was the second edition in a row without a semi-final place.
Kaur met vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati the day before the announcement. Mandhana is expected to take over, though no confirmation has yet been made.
Kaur said she was leaving the side in a good place and was ready to play for the love of the game again. She will continue as a player. India next host Zimbabwe for three T20s and three ODIs from 16 October.
For fans, this means a familiar face in a new role. Kaur led Mumbai Indians to the WPL title in two of the first three seasons and became the most capped player in women's internationals. She was also in line to become the first cricketer, male or female, to play 200 T20Is.
What makes this stand out is the timing. She steps away with a World Cup, a Lord's Test win and an Asian Games title on her recent record, and hands the next chapter to a team she says is ready.
