Billboard names Top Music Business Schools for 2026

Billboard has published its Top Music Business Schools list for 2026, naming the colleges and training centres it says are educating the next generation of music industry leaders. The list was published on 6 October 2026, according to Billboard.
It is not a chart. Billboard does not rank the schools. Names appear in alphabetical order.
Billboard said it chose the schools using industry recommendations, alumni information from honourees on its power lists, its own reporting and information requested from the schools. The trade publication has spotlighted music business education for more than a decade.
Three schools are debut honourees for 2026. They are the University of Hartford, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Memphis.
At Memphis, the recognition went to the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, which confirmed its selection in a university announcement shared on 5 October, according to the University of Memphis. The school sits in a city with a deep recording history, and its inclusion puts a new Southern public university programme on the national list.
Two historically Black colleges and universities appear on the 2026 list. They are Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Tennessee State University. Historically Black colleges and universities are institutions established with a mission to educate Black students, though they enrol students of all backgrounds today. Howard has appeared before. It was added alongside Fisk University in Nashville in the 2022 edition.
Course titles on the list point to how the curriculum is changing. American University in Washington, D.C., offers a course titled Artificial Intelligence in the Entertainment Industry: Benefits, Risks and the Future. It sits alongside longer-running subjects such as artist management, music publishing, which covers ownership and royalties for songs, master rights, which cover ownership of recordings, and live business.
The list stretches beyond the United States. It includes Abbey Road Institute in London, which was established in 2015 by the London studio immortalised by The Beatles. Previous editions have also looked abroad, including Berklee College of Music's campus in Valencia, Spain, and the United Kingdom's BRIT School in the 2023 list.
Repeat appearances matter to the schools. California State University, Northridge, said it earned a place on the 2026 list for the fifth consecutive year, according to CSUN Newsroom. Baldwin Wallace University had earlier reported five straight years on the list through the 2025 edition. Billboard's 2025 list included 45 schools in total.
What makes this stand out for families is the practical detail behind the names. For students weighing fees, moves and careers, the list is less about prestige than about where to study contracts, touring, marketing and studio work. A first job in the industry often starts with who taught you and who studied beside you.
