Jeffrey Archer, the British novelist and former Conservative politician who published more than 40 books, died on 5 October at his home in London. He was 86.

The death was confirmed as sudden and peaceful at home on Monday, according to reports on 5 October. Publishing trade outlet Publishers Marketplace reported on 6 October that he was 86 and died at his London home.

Archer's author career spanned five decades, the BBC reported. He published more than 40 books. His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, was published in 1976.

His latest book was Adam and Eve. Kate Elton, chief executive of HarperCollins UK and Archer's editor — the in-house publishing figure who works with an author on the text — said Archer had told her from the beginning that it would be his final novel.

His international sales passed 300 million copies, according to his official author site. That figure covers editions sold outside any single market.

Alongside writing, Archer was a former Conservative politician. His political career ended in a high-profile fall. Reuters reported that he was jailed for lying in a libel case, a conviction also described as imprisonment for perjury.

He continued to publish after prison. From the 1976 debut to Adam and Eve, his books remained in print across many territories and languages.
