Steven Spielberg will lead creative direction on the eighth live-action Transformers film, with Michael Bay in early talks to return as director, Paramount Pictures said on 6 October 2026, as reported by Deadline.

The appointment gives Spielberg responsibility for all creative aspects of the new film alongside long-time producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He will also continue as executive producer, a senior oversight credit, on the instalment. Live-action here means human actors filmed alongside computer-generated robots.

The story is based on a script by Jason Fuchs and is set in the modern day. Spielberg agreed to the expanded hands-on role after reading Fuchs's latest draft, according to Deadline. The producing team also includes Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro, the company behind the Transformers brand.

It is a return to familiar ground for Spielberg. He held a similar creative role on the first two films in the series, which opened in summer 2007. He identified Bay as his choice to direct that first film, the story of a battle between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, as described by Paramount Pictures.

Bay directed the first five entries in the series, as noted by Page Six, before taking a break after the 2017 film. His second film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, earned US$60.6 million in its first 24 hours in North America, Paramount said in June 2009. Spielberg stayed connected to the later Bay entries, including an executive producer credit on Transformers: Age of Extinction, according to Paramount Pictures.

The franchise has generated more than US$5.4 billion at the worldwide box office to date, according to Deadline. That total covers ticket sales in the United States and Canada, known as domestic, plus international markets. The new film is being developed under Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, who took charge after Skydance's merger with Paramount in August 2025.

For fans, this means a familiar pairing may guide the next chapter. The film-maker who picked Bay to launch the series is now shaping its eighth live-action entry. Bay has not signed. He remains in talks to direct.
