JioHotstar Takes the Partnership Path Into the Middle East

JioHotstar will enter the Middle East and North Africa inside Starzplay, under a partnership announced October 6, 2026. It will appear as a dedicated section in the Starzplay app and website, not as a separate JioHotstar app. TechCrunch
What is included and what it costs
The section will carry Indian films, TV shows, originals and reality series in multiple languages. New JioHotstar originals will arrive in the region on the same day they release in India, a timing known as day-and-date.
Sports is the exception. JioHotstar sports from India will not be included in this arrangement. Starzplay will sell JioHotstar through its own tiers, including a sports-led bundle that keeps cricket rights with Starzplay.
Two monthly prices have been disclosed. JioHotstar is available through the Starzplay Plus plan at AED 34.99 per month. A bundle with JioHotstar plus Starzplay sports including cricket costs AED 49.99 per month. TechCrunch
Why a partnership in this region
JioHotstar reports more than 500 million monthly active users. Starzplay reports more than 2.3 million subscribers.
The setup differs from the September 2026 rollout in the U.K., Canada and Singapore. There JioHotstar launched as a standalone service replacing Hotstar. In the Middle East and North Africa, billing, discovery and playback stay inside Starzplay. STARZPLAY's own JioHotstar page says JioHotstar movies, TV shows and live channels are now available across MENA via STARZPLAY. STARZPLAY

The broader context here is that direct launch and partner launch carry different costs. A direct-to-consumer app, meaning a service sold by itself, keeps control of product, viewing data and accounts. It also requires paying to acquire each customer and handling app stores and local payments in each market. A section inside an aggregator, meaning a platform that hosts other services, trades some control for ready distribution and simpler rights handling where sports rights are split.
In my view, the sports exclusion is the detail to watch. Entertainment travels well because same-day release is largely a matter of language tracks, programme data and rights clearance. Live sport works differently, with rights sold by country, shorter contracts and prices set by local bidding. The pricing fits that split. The AED 34.99 entry and AED 49.99 sports bundle make JioHotstar an add-on inside Starzplay, and success will show in take-up, effects on cancellations and whether same-day originals hold viewing beyond launch week. If that holds, viewers gain more choice without managing another app.
