Taylor Swift takes 'Patient Zero' to No. 1 and closes on Beatles record

Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the weekly ranking of the most popular songs in the United States. It is her 16th career No. 1 on the chart dated 10 October 2026, according to Billboard.
The single did not arrive alone. Swift holds four places in the top five in the same week, with "Patient Zero" at No. 1 and three other new tracks at Nos. 3 to 5. All four songs are Encore bonus tracks attached to her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.
"Patient Zero" is her third new Hot 100 chart-topper of calendar year 2026, after "Opalite" and "I Knew It, I Knew You". "I Knew It, I Knew You" spent two weeks at No. 1 from 20 June 2026, while "Patient Zero" has so far logged one week on top.
That run has put 2026 in its own category for Swift. It is the first year of her career with three new No. 1s and four total songs spending a week at No. 1. She is also the first artist since Rihanna in 2010 to record three new Hot 100 No. 1s and four total No. 1 songs in a calendar year.
The maths at the top is getting tight. The Beatles hold the all-time record with 20 Hot 100 No. 1s. Swift now sits at 16 to their 20. That is four short of the record. The Beatles' total of 20 had stood unequaled for 56 years.
The song has travelled. "Patient Zero" launched at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which track worldwide streaming and sales inside and outside America. It also reached No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart in its opening week, her third British No. 1 single of 2026, according to Billboard.
The chart arrival came with pictures. Swift premiered a star-studded music video for "Patient Zero" on MTV. In September she received the first-ever Artist Director award at the Video Music Awards.
Starting at the top is familiar territory. Her song "Cardigan", from the LP Folklore, debuted at No. 1 in August 2020.
What makes this stand out is the concentration. Four top-five places in one week means the Encore material behaved less like an add-on and more like a second release week, with airplay, streams and sales landing at once.
