The publishing trade gathered in Frankfurt am Main on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, for the opening day of the 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse.

The fair, a rights trade where publishers buy and sell the right to publish books in different languages and territories, is scheduled for 7 to 11 October 2026, according to the organiser Frankfurter Buchmesse. The Czech Republic is the Guest of Honour, meaning one country receives a spotlight programme of authors and events, at this edition.

The Wednesday programme opened with Going Global from 09:30 to 10:30 at the Global Stage in Foyer 5.1/6.1. Margaret Harrison, vice-president of digital services at the US wholesaler and distributor Ingram, was listed to moderate. The listed speakers were Kelly Gallagher, Chantal Restivo-Alessi, Oliver Schnoor and Benoît Aubin.

Market numbers followed. The Book Market in Europe 2025/2026 was scheduled for 10:00 to 10:30 at the Dialogue Stage in Foyer Hall 4.0. The speaker was Enrico Turrin of the Federation of European Publishers, the trade body for national publishers’ associations in Europe. The session details were published in the day’s programme guide Publishing Perspectives.

Two sessions were then listed side by side from 10:30 to 11:00. At the Dialogue Stage, Duncan Bruce of Spotify was to lead Books on Spotify: A New Chapter, on audiobooks on the streaming service. At the Global Stage, Innovation and Experimentation in Publishing was to feature Mary McAveney, Dominique Raccah and Keith Riegert.

Politics and history took the Dialogue Stage from 11:00 to 12:00 for Militant Democracy? The listed speakers were US historian Jill Lepore and German historian Christina Morina. The host was writer and presenter Thea Dorn.

Business returned at midday. The Global 50 CEO Talk 2026, a discussion tied to the annual ranking of the world’s largest publishing groups, was scheduled for 12:00 to 12:50 at the Dialogue Stage. Tobias Wann and Rüdiger Wischenbart were listed as speakers, with Carlo Carrenho as moderator.

The afternoon’s listed industry prize was the Digital Publishing Awards 2026 Ceremony. It was scheduled for 13:00 to 14:00 at the Dialogue Networking Area in Hall 4.0.

For readers, this means the books pipeline in one building. Frankfurt is where translation rights, meaning permission to publish a book in another language market, and audio deals are agreed long before a title reaches a shop.

The fair is open daily from 8:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with Sunday hours ending at 6:30 p.m. The organiser also lists 30 November as the closing date for its Fair Platform, the online system for meetings and contacts.
