Aaron Sorkin is back on the Facebook story, and his new film arrives in cinemas within days.

The Social Reckoning, which Sorkin directs, was reviewed by Variety on 7 October 2026. Sorkin was the screenwriter of 2010's The Social Network, according to the same review. Sony Pictures advertises the new film as "Exclusively in Theatres October 9", on its main site.

The time frame is tight. The new film covers events between 2019 and 2021, Variety reports. At the centre are two real-world chapters: reporter Jeff Horwitz's "The Facebook Files" articles for The Wall Street Journal, and whistleblower Frances Haugen's appearance before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, the Senate panel that handles business and consumer issues.

Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz, the Journal reporter, while Mikey Madison plays Haugen, Variety reports. Sony Pictures describes Haugen in the story as a young Facebook engineer who enlists Horwitz's help for what its synopsis calls a dangerous journey. The cast also includes Jeremy Strong and Betty Gilpin, listed on IMDb, and Portia Doubleday as a character named Kayleigh, according to Variety.

Early word has been mixed but curious. First reactions reported by Variety on 5 October called the film "good, not great" and harsh on Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg. A separate round-up by The Hollywood Reporter on 6 October described the response as solid, with praise for a strong screenplay and an excellent cast.

Sorkin himself is pushing a more complicated reading. In an interview published by The Hollywood Reporter on 5 October, he discusses why Zuckerberg is not a villain in the film. Some of the dialogue stays very close to the record. Madison's Haugen delivers lines taken directly from Haugen's Senate committee testimony, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 5 October.

What makes this stand out is the chain from newsroom to courtroom to cinema. Audiences will know the headlines. Here they are compressed into two hours, with the reporter and the source sharing the frame.

Sony Pictures lists THE SOCIAL RECKONING under "Featured & Coming Soon" on its movies page and hosts a dedicated official page for the title.
