Cavan Sullivan, 17, makes US history in 3-0 win over Mexico

Seventeen-year-old Cavan Sullivan became the youngest goalscorer in United States men's national team history as the US beat Mexico 3-0 on 3 October.
Julian Hall also scored in the victory, the 80th edition of the rivalry. Mexico were ranked 10th in the world at kick-off, and the result was the Americans' sixth win over their neighbours since 2021, according to U.S. Soccer.
The win was the third in a row to open the new cycle after FIFA World Cup 2026. That run includes a 4-1 Fan Appreciation win over Peru in Orlando, Florida, in September.
Sullivan stole the headlines. The Philadelphia native had already caught the eye with six goals and 11 assists in 23 matches, 16 of them starts, in the 2026 season before the September camp. His finish against Mexico put him in the record books.
The Guardian's assessment of the October window, published 7 October, named Sullivan as a Winner for his play against Mexico. An international window is the set dates when clubs must release players for national-team duty, and this one belonged to the next generation.
Hall was another Winner in that assessment. The New York starter took his chance in front of goal against Mexico. Goalkeeper Diego Kochen joined them on the Winners list after making his US debut during the window and featuring in the Mexico win, according to The Guardian.
Sebastian Berhalter completed the quartet. He started against Mexico after a World Cup where he was often one of the first substitutes off the bench.
Not everyone was on the field. Christian Pulisic, the Milan winger, was left out of head coach Mauricio Pochettino's camp for the October window. Pulisic had recently recovered from the leg injury that sidelined him at the World Cup. Asked about the absence, Pochettino declined to offer insight into any individual roster exclusion.
Pochettino did say he had spoken personally with Monaco striker Folarin Balogun about his own exclusion. Balogun had seen a move to Everton fall through before the window.
What makes this stand out is the balance. Pochettino trusted teenagers to decide a fierce rivalry game and still kept the results coming. Three wins from three. A clean sheet against Mexico. A record for a 17-year-old.
For fans, this means choice. The old names are still there. The new names are scoring already.
