Tonda Eckert can carry on as Southampton manager after escaping an immediate ban over Spygate.

An FA independent regulatory commission gave him a six-week ban from all football, suspended until the end of next season. He was also fined £28,000 and given a formal reprimand, BBC Sport reported on 7 October 2026.

The punishment covers three breaches of FA Rule E3.1, football's misconduct rule. A suspended ban means Eckert is free to work as normal for now. The six weeks will only take effect if he is involved in any other spying between now and the end of next season.

Eckert was charged with misconduct in July, with a hearing held at the end of September. The FA said the original charge related to alleged misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026, The FA confirmed. The FA published its sanction update on 7 October 2026, and Southampton listed a club statement for the same date.

It is the latest chapter in a saga that has already cost Southampton dearly. The club were expelled from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting spying on training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. They were also handed a four-point deduction for this season.

The Championship is English football's second tier, one division below the Premier League. The play-offs are a four-team knockout that decides the final promotion place. An EFL independent disciplinary commission ruled the spying had been authorised by Eckert.

Eckert first took interim charge in December 2025 with Southampton 21st in the table and fighting relegation. He was then appointed permanently and led a sharp turnaround to a fourth-place finish. This season Southampton sit 13th, with four wins from eight matches.

For fans, this means clarity at last. Southampton can plan the weeks ahead without the threat of suddenly losing their manager. Eckert can focus on coaching and results. But the warning is sharp. One more spying case before the end of next season and the six-week ban bites.
