Gears of War: E-Day launches, next game to be faster, studio says

The next Gears of War should not take another seven years to make.
That is the word from Mike Crump, studio head of The Coalition, speaking to the BBC after the launch of Gears of War: E-Day BBC. Crump said the new game gives the team a strong base to build on, and the follow-up will arrive much faster.
E-Day launched on 6 October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC Xbox. That covers consoles in Microsoft's current Xbox family and computers, including through Steam, the large PC storefront for buying and running games. The worldwide launch was set for 8am Pacific on launch day. Early Access began on 1 October ahead of that full release.
The game is also available with Game Pass Ultimate, the subscription service that lets members play a catalogue of titles for a monthly fee. Pre-orders and pre-purchases began on 7 June 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Anyone who pre-ordered could try an open beta early, with access starting on 6 August.
The timing closes a long gap. Gears 5 was released in 2019 GameSpot. Seven years separate the two releases. E-Day steps back in the story to the events of Emergence Day, the invasion moment when underground Locust forces first broke through to the surface and set the wider war in motion.
Crump told the BBC that E-Day provides a great foundation for future games. He said the next entry will not take nearly as long to make. He pointed to continuity at the studio, saying its leadership team has worked together for upwards of 20 years.
Crump has previously called E-Day the studio's most ambitious game yet. The BBC framed its coverage under the headline 'Xbox bets on Gears of War in battle of gaming giants'. The comments on a faster follow-up were reported on 7 October 2026, with the current date given as 7 October 2026.
What makes this stand out is the production logic. A returning leadership group plus finished tools and a clear story starting point can shorten the early months of a project. For players, that points to a shorter wait, though without any promise yet on dates, platforms or story detail.
No release window for the next game has been announced. For now, E-Day is the focus, and the studio says it is built to support what comes next.
