Declan Rice is close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Arsenal.

Sources told BBC Sport that talks are now at an advanced stage. The deal would extend the England midfielder's stay beyond his current terms, which run to the end of next season.

Rice joined Arsenal from West Ham in July 2023 for £105m. The fee was £100m up front plus £5m in add-ons, extra payments linked to performance and appearances.

Arsenal moved early to avoid any doubt about his future. The BBC first reported in March that extension talks were under way. They were then expected to accelerate during the September international break, and that is what has happened.

He rarely misses a game. Rice has now made more than 150 starts for the club since his move across London.

His output has grown too. In the 2024/25 season he scored nine goals and made 10 assists in all competitions, often driving late into the box from midfield, the central area in front of the defence.

Talks have also covered pay. His reported current salary is £240,000 per week. Bukayo Saka is Arsenal's best earner, believed to earn about £350,000 per week.

For supporters, this means continuity. Rice has become the player Arsenal build around in big matches, the one who sets the tempo and covers ground when others push forward.

Nothing is signed yet. But with negotiations described as advanced, Arsenal look set to keep a key part of their side in place for the years ahead.
