Sebastian Stan says Avengers: Doomsday will be “probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways.”

The actor, who returns as Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, made the comment in an interview with Decider, published 7 October, while promoting his new project Fjord, as reported by Deadline.

Stan was careful to add limits to his own tease. He said he has not seen the finished film and does not know how it turned out, according to Deadline. “We’ll see who makes it to the next level,” he said.

Much of his excitement was about the reunion. Stan said filming gave him a chance to get back together with everyone, including Chris Evans, his long-time Marvel co-star, according to Decider. He called the experience “very nostalgic.”

He also described the effort to keep Evans’s involvement quiet. Evans was kept “isolated” in London during production to protect the secret, Stan said, according to Yahoo.

Avengers: Doomsday is due in cinemas on 18 December as part of Phase Six, the current chapter of Marvel’s linked films and series, according to Deadline. It follows 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and brings back directors Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind that film.

The line-up is built for crossovers. The film is set to feature the Avengers, the Wakandans, the Thunderbolts, also known as the New Avengers, alongside the Fantastic Four and the original X-Men, with groups drawn from different story worlds within Marvel’s multiverse, according to Deadline.

For fans, this means a familiar fan favourite is bracing them for losses. Stan did not name who is at risk. His warning was short. The heartbreak, he suggested, is still to come.
