Miles Teller will be honoured with the Artist of Distinction Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Variety reported on Oct. 7.

The presentation will take place at the festival's annual Honors ceremony on Oct. 18. The festival runs Oct. 15-22 in the coastal city in Southern California. It is a busy night for him, as his latest film screens at the festival on the same day.

That film is Paper Tiger, a thriller from director James Gray. Teller stars alongside Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. The story follows two brothers who become entangled in a dangerous criminal underworld.

The festival screening comes a few weeks before the film reaches wider audiences. Distributor Neon will release Paper Tiger in theatres on Nov. 13, according to Variety. Festival slots of this kind are often used to introduce autumn releases to awards voters and local audiences before opening weekend.

Teller's career has moved steadily between independent drama and large studio releases. He broke through in Damien Chazelle's drumming drama Whiplash. He later played Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the pilot son of Goose, in Top Gun: Maverick. On television, he portrayed producer Al Ruddy in the limited series The Offer, which tells the story behind the making of The Godfather.

He is not slowing down. Teller is currently in production on the crime thriller Copperhead. Details of that project have not been announced.

At Newport Beach, he joins a long list of previously announced honourees. They include KJ Apa, Sosie Bacon, Gemma Chan, Jonás Cuarón, casting director Sarah Finn, Mckenna Grace, Justin Hartley, Taraji P. Henson and Jack O'Connell. Gregg Schwenk is chief executive and executive director of the festival.

Paper Tiger is also part of a wider centrepiece line-up. It screens alongside Ink and Wild Horse Nine, which were named as centrepiece titles by Film Threat last month.

For fans, this means a first close look at Teller's next screen role. He arrives in Newport Beach with a new thriller to launch and another already filming. The award puts him at the centre of the festival's second weekend.
