How Wix's $80M Acquisition Base44 Built Its Own AI Model

Base44, which Wix bought for $80 million last June, has launched its own language model into production. The model, called Base-1, went live in late June 2026 and is now running on the platform's servers. Wix's press team describes this as the first app-creation platform to run on a purpose-built AI model. What matters here is the speed: roughly twelve months from acquisition to a working proprietary model in customer hands.

From Using Other Models to Building Your Own

Most no-code and low-code platforms that use AI — a category that exploded after 2023 — take the same path: they rent access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar models and wrap them in their own interface. That approach works, but it means the platform owner has no control over how the model works internally. When you build your own, everything changes.

A proprietary model gives you direct control over what the AI learns, how it formats its answers, and how much it costs to run. For Base44, those levers matter more than for a typical AI tool. App generation is demanding work — the model needs to produce multiple files that work together, follow framework rules correctly, and accept feedback when the code doesn't quite work. A model trained specifically on that narrow task can, in theory, outperform a general-purpose model at this specific job.

We don't yet have independent proof that Base-1 does this better than renting access to a frontier model. What is confirmed is that it's live and handling real user requests, not sitting in a limited test phase.

Base44 Is Expanding in Several Directions at Once

The model launch didn't happen in a vacuum. In March 2026, Base44 added Superagents — a feature that lets users build AI agents that can work autonomously on specific tasks. This is a step beyond the traditional drag-and-drop app builder. Around the same time, the platform built a presence inside ChatGPT itself, using OpenAI's integration tools. That means users can build Base44 apps directly from within ChatGPT.

This last move is curious given the announcement of Base-1. Base44 is betting on multiple paths at once. By integrating with ChatGPT, the platform can attract users through OpenAI's enormous audience. By training its own model, it can eventually serve those same users on its own infrastructure. It's hedging, not doubling down on any single approach.

Why This Matters for Wix

From Wix's standpoint, this strengthens the business case for the Base44 acquisition. Wix built its reputation as a simple website builder, but the acquisition was a bet on something broader — the software-creation market. That market is much larger and still has room for new tools.

A proprietary model built specifically for code generation is harder to copy than a facelift to the user interface. It also creates a long-term advantage: every app built on Base44 feeds data back into improving the model, and Wix captures all of that learning. A third-party model provider gets nothing from Base44's user base.

That said, the costs and risks are substantial. Training and running a production AI model is expensive, and the field moves fast. A small, specialized model can outperform much larger models at specific tasks, but you have to keep updating it as the competition improves. This isn't a one-time project — it's an ongoing engineering commitment that will require continued investment and attention.

What Base44 does with Base-1 over the next year will tell the real story. Can the model reduce costs? Does it actually help users build apps faster or better? Does it drive customer retention? Those metrics matter far more than the announcement itself.
