The Media Coalition has won the first IPA Freedom of Expression Defenders Award at the 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse.

The prize is presented by the International Publishers Association. News of the win was reported on 8 October, the day after the laureate was due to be named in Frankfurt, Publishing Perspectives.

The winner is a U.S.-based organisation founded in 1973. Its executive director is David Horowitz. It was nominated for the inaugural award by the Association of American Publishers.

That nomination route matters. Trade associations put names forward. An IPA process then selects the recipient. No shortlist details were included in the latest report.

The award recognises initiatives defending freedom of expression, freedom to publish and the freedom to read, according to the International Publishers Association. Its scope runs across book publishing, journalism and archives.

The setting is familiar to the books trade. The Frankfurter Buchmesse, known in English as the Frankfurt Book Fair, is the annual gathering where publishers buy and sell rights territory by territory. This year it hosted the first edition of the prize.

The timetable was set out in advance. The IPA announced the shortlist for the inaugural award on 9 September 2026, the association said. The laureate was then scheduled to be announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Wednesday 7 October.

What makes this stand out is the newness. A first prize sets a pattern. Future winners will be measured against this choice.
