Lightdox picks up Chris Marker documentary Nostalgia for the Future

Lightdox has acquired international sales rights to Nostalgia for the Future, a documentary about filmmaker Chris Marker (1921-2012), Deadline reported on 8 October 2026.
International sales is the business of licensing a film to distributors, territory by territory. Lightdox will handle that work for buyers outside the film's home countries. The company is led by chief executive Anna Berthollet.
The film is narrated by actor Charlotte Rampling. Her voice leads viewers through Marker's life and work. The story draws on his personal archive, a collection of 550 boxes held by the Cinémathèque française. That archive provides the letters, notes and film material at the heart of the documentary.
Nostalgia for the Future is a Belgium-Netherlands-Italy co-production, meaning producers in three countries shared the financing and production. Brecht Debackere wrote and directed the film. Producer Steven Dhoedt made it through Visualantics, with co-producers SeriousFilm, Cobra Films and Ghirigori. Co-producers split tasks and costs across borders, a common way to fund documentaries in Europe.
The photography is by Jérôme De Gerlache, Alexi Van Hennecker and Ben Grinand. They shot the new material that frames the archive. Beppe Leonetti edited the film. The original music is by Rutger Zuydervelt and Niels Borrey, who shape tone and pace under picture and narration.
It made its world premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival. A world premiere is the first public screening, and it starts the festival run. The film next plays Film Fest Gent, with screenings listed on Sunday, Monday and Thursday, according to Deadline. Festival screenings give distributors a chance to see the film with an audience before they buy.
What makes this stand out for newcomers is access. Archive films can feel closed off without context. A feature-length guide through 550 boxes, told in the cinema with a familiar narrator, offers a clear way in.
