La Bola Negra to Receive Gotham Vanguard Tribute
La Bola Negra, the Spanish-language drama from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, will receive the Gotham Vanguard Tribute at the 2026 Gotham Film Awards on Nov. 30, Variety reported. The ceremony will take place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The tribute will honour the directors, known together as Los Javis, alongside the film’s ensemble cast. That group includes Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, according to Variety.
The film takes its title from an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca. It draws on his writings and legacy, with a script co-written by Calvo and Ambrossi with Alberto Conejero.
The Gotham selection follows a strong festival run. Calvo and Ambrossi won the best director prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for the film, Variety reported. It then won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the audience-voted top prize.
That Toronto win carried two firsts. It was the first Netflix title to take the festival’s top prize, and the first international film in 15 years to do so. The film is now Spain’s official submission for the Academy Award for International Feature Film, the Oscar category for films made outside the United States in languages other than English.
Audiences will not have long to wait. La Bola Negra opens in cinemas in New York City and Los Angeles on Oct. 16, before expanding to additional theatres in the U.S. and Canada. It will then debut on Netflix in the United States and Canada on Dec. 2, Variety reported.
Two other tributes for the Gotham gala have been announced. Animation studio LAIKA will receive the Gotham Anniversary Tribute. Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute for Ink.
What makes this stand out is the calendar. A late-November Gotham honour lands between the October cinema opening and the December streaming launch, putting cast and film-makers in New York at the point when awards talk builds.
