Amazon Replaces Fire with Alexa Tablets and Opens the Play Store

Amazon announced in October 2026 a new lineup of Alexa tablets that can access the Google Play Store without a workaround. The launch retires the Fire tablet brand in favor of a premium Alexa tablet line Engadget.

The new family consists of Android-based tablets under the Alexa brand. There are three sizes. All three, along with new Kids tablets, were listed as available for purchase on announcement day with shipping on October 14, 2026 About Amazon. In the US, Mexico and Canada, availability starts October 14. In the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, it follows five days later.

Tablets: specs and pricing

The Alexa Tablet 8 starts at $230. It has an 8.7-inch display, 4GB of RAM (short-term memory for running apps) and 64GB or 128GB storage options. Amazon claims up to 14 hours of video playback and 19 hours of Kindle reading on a charge.

The Alexa Tablet 11 starts at $330. It has an 11-inch 2.5K display (sharper than standard 1080p) with 90Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and 16:10 aspect ratio, a shape well suited to video. It pairs 8GB of RAM with dual Dolby Atmos speakers for spatial sound. For local inference, meaning AI work done on the device rather than in the cloud, it includes a fifth-gen MDLA NPU, a processor built for AI tasks. Amazon claims up to 15 hours of video playback.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro costs $500. It has a 12-inch 280 PPI display (pixels per inch, a measure of sharpness) with 120Hz refresh rate and 3:2 aspect ratio. Inside are an 8-core CPU, 7-core GPU, 8th-gen MDLA NPU, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Amazon claims battery life of up to 16 hours for video playback and 20 hours for Kindle usage.

The 11 and 12 Pro add a fingerprint sensor for unlocking. Amazon also offers a Nanomatte anti-glare option for $50 extra across the Alexa tablets. The Alexa Tablet Pro Pen costs $90.

From my own experience sharing devices at home, that fingerprint sensor has a clear use on tablets passed between family members.

Amazon also announced a new family of tablets designed just for kids. Amazon Kids Tablets will ship on October 14, 2026 alongside the three Alexa Tablets.

From personal experience raising kids, I have watched my own children treat parental controls and content filters as background noise until the hardware itself feels like theirs, and a separate Kids family acknowledges that split directly.

Alexa+ becomes the system layer

Amazon's new Alexa Tablets have Alexa+ built in. Alexa+ is now available to everyone in the US and free for Prime members. It has also arrived in India as the assistant expands internationally.

For Fire TV, Amazon announced Alexa+ features spanning from TV to phone. The Fire TV update centers on an all-new, faster 4K stick and new remote design. Amazon describes the stick in Devices news items dated Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2026 as an all-new, faster 4K stick with a new remote design, and the October hardware event confirmed an updated Fire TV Stick 4K with a new remote.

The broader context here is straightforward for developers and device managers. Native Play Store access removes a long-standing packaging and testing fork. No sideloading, or manual installs outside the store. No alternate app store submission. No compatibility shim for Google Mobile Services dependencies, the background Google services many Android apps expect. Combined with fingerprint authentication on the upper tiers and dedicated NPUs for on-device processing, the tablets look positioned less as content storefronts and more as general-purpose Alexa+ endpoints where latency-sensitive inference, where a fast local response matters, can stay local.

Kindles, Ring and what comes next

Amazon describes its new Kindle lineup as a completely redesigned Kindle family. The company announced a new batch of Kindles in October 2026 alongside the tablets, though it held back full detail on models and pricing in the initial Devices rundown.

On the smart home side, Amazon announced new Ring gear. Ring introduced four new 4K cameras and a pan-tilt indoor cam. Ring also debuted Video Descriptions, intelligent updates on what is happening at home, and launched an NFL Game Day Cam Cover for all 32 teams.

Another Ring product is a smart lock that can be recharged by hand. Ring describes it as its first-ever smart lock, eliminating the need for a key with a built-in power dial and four ways in.

In my view, Amazon's tease of more Alexa-branded devices is worth taking literally. Once the assistant, the tablet hardware, the TV stick and the home sensors share the same branding and the same Play Store baseline, adding additional form factors becomes incremental rather than architectural. The payoff, if Amazon executes, is a household stack where the same Alexa+ session can start on a tablet, continue on TV and get summarized from a doorbell camera, with less friction for third-party app developers than Amazon hardware has historically imposed.
