Microsoft Rebuilds Windows 11 Search for Speed and Direct Action

The work is led on the product side by Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team. Rawat calls the new experience built for speed. He set out that description in Microsoft's Windows Insider blog post "From searching to doing: Building a faster, more streamlined Windows Search" published on October 7, 2026. Microsoft

Under the hood, the rebuild moves Search to WinUI 3, Microsoft's current framework for building Windows interfaces. Microsoft rebuilt it from scratch on that framework and said early testing showed substantial gains in performance and memory use. Speed is the goal, with efficiency close behind.

The interface gets a streamlined design meant to make results easier to scan, according to Microsoft's companion post "Announcing new builds for 7 October 2026." Microsoft It has fast animations and a large preview pane, with results shown inline rather than as a flat list to open elsewhere.

Matching is also changing. Rawat said Microsoft is improving Search to handle typos and synonyms, cutting down on the need for exact wording that has made system search brittle for filenames, settings names and app titles. Matched files now show inline previews, including PowerPoint presentations, photos and other files.

Search can also act, not only find. It can run typed commands as system actions, such as turning Bluetooth or dark mode on and off, minimizing windows, or opening apps side-by-side. Everyday phrasing goes straight to a settings switch or window operation, without opening Settings or menus.

That action layer reaches beyond the PC through Phone Link. With Phone Link connected, Search actions extend to the paired phone, so a typed request like "text mom, I'm running late" sends a text from the phone. That gives one entry point for file retrieval, system control and cross-device messaging.

Rollout is staged. Microsoft is testing with Windows Insiders first. Work is underway to bring the experience to the Start menu and to fit different taskbar positions and Windows configurations, according to Rawat. Microsoft said the new Search is coming to all PCs later in 2026. Windows Latest

That timing sits alongside Windows 11 version 26H2, arriving in fall 2026 as the large 2026 update for Start, Taskbar, Search, File Explorer, Widgets, accessibility and system recovery. Windows Central

The broader context here is three decades of OS search split between indexing and intent. Indexing, keeping a list of where things are, was solved. Intent, understanding what the user wants, was not. What Microsoft is testing puts a launcher, a settings control and a file viewer in one query box.

In my view, that combination is sensible if it stays fast and predictable. People trying Insider builds should watch memory use under sustained indexing, smoothness on lower-end graphics, synonym accuracy against false matches, and permission rules for Phone Link actions. If Microsoft keeps the claimed speed gains and keeps actions clear and reversible, Search becomes a faster way to run a PC by keyboard.
