Manchester United go into Saturday evening at home to Tottenham sitting 12th in the Premier League with one league win, looking down at a Spurs side bottom of the table on two points.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 17:30 BST on Saturday 10 October, with Michael Carrick in charge of United and Roberto De Zerbi leading Spurs, according to club previews Manchester United. For Carrick, it is close to a must-win. That was the verdict in The Guardian's preview on 9 October, with a tough run of fixtures waiting straight after.

United started the 2026-27 league season with a defeat away at Hull. They later beat promoted Ipswich, with captain Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick in that game. Only Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo had scored twice or more for United at that stage, while Matheus Cunha had one goal and Benjamin Sesko was sidelined by injury.

The numbers paint a strange picture. United had more touches in opposition penalty boxes than any other team in the league. They had also allowed fewer opposition touches in their own box than anyone else. Yet they were the only side yet to keep a clean sheet, which means playing a full league game without conceding a goal.

Spurs arrive with their own pressure. They spent £300m in the summer on a rebuild under De Zerbi and sit last. Both teams averaged 60% possession per match early in the season, which is simply their share of the ball, so Saturday could become a battle for control rather than a straight attack against defence.

October does Carrick no favours. United face six fixtures in the month, including away trips to Leeds, Atlético Madrid, Como and Chelsea. Drop points against the league's bottom side now and that road gets steeper fast.

What makes this stand out is the history hanging over it. The Guardian's weekend guide described Carrick as wary of "Dr Tottenham", a fans' joke that Spurs have a habit of curing an opponent's bad form by losing to them The Guardian. United fans will hope the cure works one more time. Spurs fans will hope their team finally pick up a first win and drag someone else into the scramble with them.
