Universal Pictures' Other Mommy earned $3.6 million in previews in the domestic market, the United States and Canada, to take the early lead at the weekend box office.

The R-rated horror film collected that total from shows beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday in 2,850 theatres, according to Deadline. It is now playing on 3,365 screens after its release only in theatres on 9 October 2026.

The film stars Jessica Chastain and is directed by Rob Savage. Chastain plays dual roles as the real mother and the other mother. It was produced by James Wan and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

Pre-release tracking had the film eyeing an opening in the mid-$20 million range. It was also projected to open at No. 1 at the US weekend box office, according to Deadline.

That would put it well ahead of its only direct new rival. The Social Reckoning earned $650,000 from Thursday previews starting at 4 p.m. at 2,368 locations, according to Deadline.

The film comes from Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment. It is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin as a follow-up to 2010's The Social Network.

Mikey Madison plays Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, with Jeremy Strong playing Mark Zuckerberg.

The Social Reckoning had a production cost of $30 million after incentives and was 50% financed by Alcon. Projections put its opening weekend in the mid-single-digit millions, with an earlier forecast targeting $7 million, according to Variety.

What makes this stand out is the split. One title is chasing a broad horror audience. The other is a lower-cost, adult-skewing drama opening to softer numbers.
