Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will receive the Variety Vanguard Award in Cannes on 12 October. The prize recognises her role in building Netflix into a service that orders programmes all over the world.

The presentation takes place at the Palais des Festivals during MIPCOM CANNES, an international market where producers, channels and streamers buy and sell shows, running 12 to 15 October. Bajaria will sit for an onstage conversation with Cynthia Littleton, Variety's co-editor in chief. Variety reported the honour on 9 October.

The scale she oversees is vast. Netflix reaches more than 190 countries and does business in 45 currencies, with a $20 billion content budget and offices in 27 countries. It produces television and original films in 50 languages for more than 50 countries, commissioning thousands of hours of local-language content each year, according to the same report.

Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 to lead its push into unscripted programming, meaning reality, competition and documentary series. She had spent more than 15 years at CBS and later headed Universal Television at NBC. In 2019 she was promoted to lead Netflix's international originals strategy, overseeing series made outside the United States.

She grew up in London and Zambia before her family moved to Torrance, California, when she was nine. Producer Shonda Rhimes signed on with Netflix in 2017, during the expansion Bajaria helped lead. Bajaria told Variety there is no road map for making local programming at unprecedented scale.

Her programming pitch has stayed consistent. At Netflix's 2023 Upfront, an annual showcase where the company presents its plans to advertisers, she said success comes from "super serving our audience," Netflix reported. At the 2025 Upfront she described her approach as "programming a slate, not slots," Netflix reported.

MIPCOM CANNES has published a 2026 Preview Magazine as a guide to this year's market. The edition features insights from Bajaria and previews the world premieres of Honey and Queen Silvia, MIPCOM CANNES said. It also covers the creator economy, artificial intelligence, branded entertainment, microdrama and new distribution models.

What makes this stand out is the job behind the title. A chief content officer decides what gets ordered, what gets another series and what ends. That choice decides who keeps working.
