John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell took Wild Horse Nine to London on Friday, Oct. 9, for its BFI London Film Festival premiere at Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The screening anchored the early weekend of the festival's 70th edition. That edition runs Oct. 7-18. Two further public screenings were listed for Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11:00 and Sunday, Oct. 11 at 15:00, according to BFI.

The film is a dark comedy written and directed by Martin McDonagh. Malkovich and Rockwell play Chris and Lee, longtime CIA partners stationed in Santiago, Chile. Their bureau chief, played by Steve Buscemi, sends them to Easter Island.

The story is set shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, as noted in the film's trailer. On Easter Island, one of the agents faces an existential crisis over past actions, according to the Toronto festival synopsis. Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas play two rebellious Chilean students caught up in the mission.

McDonagh arrived with longtime partner Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The pair shared a kiss shortly before lights went down. On the red carpet, McDonagh told The Hollywood Reporter he thinks British audiences will enjoy the film's dark humour.

Buscemi also spoke on the carpet about his character, MJ. He described MJ as a CIA boss under pressure from his own bosses. The line sketches a chain of command with nerves at every level.

Rockwell kept it loose on stage. He said reading the script was part of what drew him to the project. He then joked that McDonagh was annoyingly handsome but very talented. Short pause. Big laugh.

Malkovich arrived in London with fresh Venice laurels. He won the Volpi Cup, Venice's best-actor prize, for his performance in Wild Horse Nine. The film had earlier earned the Venice Film Festival's first raucous standing ovation of 2026, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The festival run continues beyond London. Wild Horse Nine was selected for its Canadian premiere in the Special Presentations programme at Toronto, a showcase strand for high-profile titles. McDonagh is also due to be honoured for his career at the 2026 Zurich Film Festival.

For audiences, this means a short wait. Wild Horse Nine is scheduled for theatrical release on Nov. 6, 2026. London got an early look. Everyone else follows in November.
