Roseanne Barr has already filmed an eight-part comedy and is now looking for someone to release it.

The series is called Meemaw: A Modern-Day Fable. Co-creator Allan Stephan told The Hollywood Reporter that representatives for the show are in talks with a few places about distribution. No buyer is signed.

It was made as an independent production, meaning it was shot without a network or streamer attached first. Now the team is shopping it to distributors, meaning finding a company to buy and release it. Stephan said a trailer has been sent to interested parties, with streamers the main target. He did not name any specific platforms.

The plot centres on Barr as the matriarch of a Texas family of preppers, people who stockpile supplies for emergencies, as they organise a bat mitzvah for her granddaughter. The season runs for eight episodes, each 30 minutes long. It was shot in Austin.

Barr co-created the show with Stephan. Stephan previously worked on Roseanne and Arli$$, according to Page Six, which first reported that the series had been filmed in secret. Allen Covert helped write Meemaw.

The cast around Barr includes Randy Quaid, Drea de Matteo, Omar Gooding, Doug Jones and Indy Bugg. Jon Lovitz, Tony Hinchcliffe and Kim Congdon make cameo appearances.

Money for the first season was raised independently by Barr with help from her son Jake Pentland, Stephan said. That do-it-yourself route is unusual for a multi-camera-style half-hour with a large ensemble. It also means the production team carries the cost until a distributor comes aboard.

The project has been in the works for some time. Barr told Variety in January 2025 that she had written a new comedy with Stephan and was about to take it to market. That earlier report described the idea as a comedy about saving America.

For viewers, this means there is a finished season but no release date or home yet. A deal still has to be struck before anyone can watch it.
