It took 14 years. Audrey Niffenegger has finished the sequel to The Time Traveler’s Wife, more than two decades after the original novel was published in 2003.

The new book is called Life Out of Order. It centres on Alba, the daughter of Clare and Henry from the first novel, according to The Guardian. Alba was born with the same involuntary time-travel condition as her father. She has more control over it.

Niffenegger said she began writing the sequel in 2012, just after Barack Obama’s re-election as United States president. She described the long process in an interview published on 10 October 2026. Fourteen years is the latest figure. Earlier trade reports had put the count at 13 years.

That earlier reporting also set out the publication plan. Life Out of Order was scheduled for autumn 2026, according to The Guardian. In the United Kingdom, it is due on 27 October from Jonathan Cape.

Jonathan Cape is an imprint, meaning a distinct publishing brand, inside Penguin. The sequel is set in the same world as The Time Traveler’s Wife. Its central character is listed in full as Alba DeTamble.

The road to publication was long. Niffenegger was already reported to be writing a follow-up in August 2014. At that point she said it was one of two books in progress. Her website later used the working title The Other Husband for the project, and at one stage gave an expected publication date of 2018 or 2019.

Those dates passed. The book kept growing. Working titles change during editing and do not always survive to the finished copy.

The first book had a slow start too. Niffenegger had the idea for The Time Traveler’s Wife in 1997. It then took almost five years to write, as she explained in a 2015 post about her working method.

For readers, this means a return, not a restart. The focus shifts to the next generation. Alba must live with an inheritance she did not choose, and manage it with greater skill than her father could.

The original novel followed librarian Henry DeTamble, who travels uncontrollably through time, and Clare Abshire, the artist who loves him across that disorder. The sequel stays with that family. It asks what happens after.
