Scotland beat the Czech Republic 2-0 away in Pardubice to take control of their Women's World Cup play-off.

It was the first leg of a round one play-off, a knockout tie played over two games where the combined score decides who goes through. The match was played on Friday 9 October at Stadion Arnošta Košťála in Pardubice, according to the Scottish FA. The return leg is in Paisley on Tuesday, with Sweden the likely opponents for the winners, as reported by BBC Sport.

Caroline Weir gave Scotland the lead. Substitute Claire Emslie added the second to finish the job. Scotland were much improved after half-time, and held firm when the Czechs thought they had a late penalty before the decision was overturned.

The night also belonged to Erin Cuthbert. The 28-year-old Chelsea captain came on as a substitute for her first appearance of the season. She had not played at club level before this trip because of knee ligament damage, reported by the Herald Scotland.

Cuthbert told BBC Scotland she felt gladness and relief to be back after a long summer of recovery. She said she spent the best part of a month in crutches and a brace. She lost muscle and had to build it all back up again.

That is hard work. It happens away from crowds and cameras.

Emslie had her own reason to celebrate. Her goal was her first since becoming a mother. Her son and her mother were in the stands in Pardubice to see it. She ran straight towards them after the ball went in.

Cuthbert said she was delighted with the win but called 2-0 a dangerous lead. Scotland still have a job to do. One loose night in Paisley could change everything.

What makes this stand out is how much came together in one evening. Scotland got the result they wanted. They also welcomed back a key midfielder and watched a teammate mark a personal milestone. For fans, this means Tuesday is now something to lean into. A lead to protect, with good stories behind it.
