Balding's 1-2-3 leads the way as Drumbeat and Cut A Dash strike

Andrew Balding trained the first three home in the Darley Stakes at Newmarket on 10 October.
Humidity, ridden by James Doyle, won the Group Three race over one mile and one furlong. The Lost King finished second and High Stock took third, completing the clean sweep for the yard, The Guardian. Group Three is high-level company, a step below the very top Group One races.
Balding saddled three of the five runners in the 1:15pm contest. All three beat the rest. That is total control.
Aidan O'Brien answered in the next race at Newmarket. Drumbeat, trained by O'Brien, won the Group Three Zetland Stakes over one mile and two furlongs at 1:50pm. Wykehurst Park, trained by Balding, finished second, The Guardian.
Drumbeat started as even-money favourite, meaning the betting market made him the most likely winner. The winner's prize was £42,500. Even money pays the same amount as the stake, so backers doubled their money before stake returned.
At York, the sprinters had their moment. Cut A Dash won the Listed Rockingham Stakes over six furlongs at 1:30pm, finishing ahead of Agamemnon, The Guardian. Listed level sits just below Group races in the pecking order. A furlong is just over 200 metres, so six furlongs is a sharp test of early speed.
Cut A Dash started as 4-1 joint-favourite alongside Divine Whisper. That price means four pounds profit for every pound staked, before the stake comes back. Joint-favourite means two horses shared the shortest price in the market.
The Newmarket races formed part of the Dubai Future Champions Festival, held at Newmarket Racecourses on 9 and 10 October, The Jockey Club. The Friday session on 9 October was scheduled to open at 11:15am, with the first race at 1:15pm and the last at 5:20pm. The Saturday card then carried the meeting through its second day.
Balding had arrived with a strong team. The Jockey Club had flagged his runners ahead of the meeting, noting he was bringing classic hopefuls and seasoned stayers to the Festival. The Darley result showed why. Humidity led home two stablemates, while Wykehurst Park then ran a solid second behind Drumbeat.
What makes this stand out is the shape of Balding's afternoon. A 1-2-3 in a Group Three is rare. To follow it with a second in the next Group Three summed up a day when one yard kept finding the frame.
