Other Mommy Scares Up $28 Million Weekend to Top Box Office

Horror won. "Other Mommy" took first place at the North American box office with $12.6 million on Friday from 3,365 theatres, and is projected to earn $28 million by Sunday, according to figures reported by Variety.
Those weekend totals are studio estimates until Monday's actuals. Domestic here means the United States and Canada, the industry's home market.
The new release comes from Universal and horror producers Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. It stars Jessica Chastain as Ursula and the titular Other Mommy, and is based on Josh Malerman's 2024 novel "Incidents Around the House," Variety reported.
The film was directed by Rob Savage and opened only in theatres on 9 October. It carries an $18 million price tag before marketing costs, which puts the projected $28 million opening well above its production budget.
In second place, "Verity" earned $4 million on Friday. It is projected to add $14.2 million by Sunday, which would bring its domestic total to $56.6 million.
"Resident Evil" landed in third with $2.32 million on Friday. It is targeting $8.2 million for the weekend, for a cumulative domestic gross of $138.37 million.
"The Social Reckoning" placed fourth with $2.15 million on Friday from 2,606 North American theatres. The Sony release is expected to earn $6 million domestically through the weekend.
"The Heart of the Beast" rounded out the top five with $1.96 million on Friday. It is expected to add $6.91 million by Sunday for a cumulative gross of $49.47 million.
What makes this stand out is the margin. A low-budget horror debut pulled clear of a crowded field that included a romance holdover, an action franchise and two newer titles. For fans heading to cinemas, it means horror holds the most screens and the most showtimes through Sunday.
