Horror film Other Mommy opened at No. 1 at the North American box office with US$27.5 million in studio estimates reported on 11 October, ahead of Monday's actuals.

The film stars Jessica Chastain and was directed by Rob Savage, Variety reported. It was released by Universal and Blumhouse and made for US$18 million. It had earned US$3.6 million in previews, according to an earlier report from The Hollywood Reporter, and added US$17.69 million internationally for a global tally of US$45.19 million.

On review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes it holds 19%. On CinemaScore, a poll of opening-night audiences, it earned a D+ grade.

The Social Reckoning opened in fifth place in North America, the United States and Canada, with US$5.5 million in studio estimates. That was below the US$7 million to US$8 million opening that had been projected.

The R-rated Sony drama was written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. It follows a Facebook engineer played by Mikey Madison who leaks internal documents to a reporter played by Jeremy Allen White. It cost US$30 million to produce, Variety reported.

Its predecessor, The Social Network, opened to US$22 million almost exactly 16 years earlier and earned US$224 million globally. The Social Reckoning holds 54% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- on CinemaScore.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros.’ Digger, starring Tom Cruise, earned US$2.9 million from 3,321 theatres in its second weekend. That was down 64% from its US$8 million debut. It had reached US$14 million domestically and US$30 million globally at the time of the report, against a production cost above US$160 million.

What makes this stand out is the arithmetic. Other Mommy covered its production budget in its first three days in North America alone. The two higher-priced titles have a longer road to the same point.
