A 45-year-old grandfather shot and killed eight people at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, then killed himself.

The gunfire began shortly before 5 p.m. Nine people are dead in total, including the suspected shooter, according to Reuters.

Erie is about 120 miles (190 km) north of Pittsburgh. It was a home. Officers handled three scenes in and around the house.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said it began inside. Audio and video caught muffled shots inside just before two distressed women pounded on the door, Lorah said, according to The Guardian. The gunman came outside, shot them, and went back inside.

Officers found the two women dead outside. On the first floor were a five-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl. In a stairwell were two women and two young men. The shooter was dead on the second floor.

Lorah said the shooter was related to seven of the victims. He said the eighth victim was a friend of a pregnant woman who was among those killed.

The victims ranged from 22 months to 44 years old, according to NBC News. They included a pregnant woman, her five-year-old son and her unborn baby. They also included one-year-old Amarianna, the daughter of Julius Windham.

As of October 11, 2026, police had not named the shooter. The age range does not show how the unborn baby is counted. Police have not detailed the weapons, ownership, or exact relationships in the house.

The broader context here is the tight, domestic footprint. Seven victims were relatives; the eighth was a family friend. The gunfire moved from inside to the doorway and back inside, like a household crisis rather than a public attack plan. That points investigators to family dynamics, past police or court contact, and the hours before the first shots.

Looking at what this means for Erie, police now need identifications, autopsies, exams to set cause of death, and ballistic comparison to link bullets to a gun, and a timeline from Lorah's audio and video. Family killings leave few witnesses, so survivors, neighbors and relatives will shape findings on motive and warning signs. For a city Erie's size, losing eight from one extended family, including small children, hits beyond the police perimeter.
