Theatre director Adam Lenson has died aged 41 from cancer.

Lenson was born on 25 May 1985 and died on 8 October 2026, according to a remembrance published by Musical Theatre Review. Tributes have been paid from across the theatre world following the news, WhatsOnStage reported on 12 October.

He was best known as a director and developer of new musicals. His wife is Emma Jude Harris, who wrote his obituary for The Stage.

Lenson directed the musical Cable Street in London and in the United States. The London runs were followed by a New York staging, described in January as its first international transfer by The Stage. The show has music and lyrics by Tim Gilvin, a book by Alex Kanefsky and musical supervision by Tamara Saringer. Producer Neil Marcus collaborated with Lenson on the production.

His other directing credits included Wasted and The Rink at Southwark Playhouse. He also directed Superhero and the new musical Flyby at Southwark Playhouse, and directed The Sorrows of Satan.

Much of his work centred on creating room for other writers. He led Signal, a recurring series presented online and in person where writers could test new material in front of an audience. Writers involved over the years included Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, Darren Clark and Anoushka Lucas.

He also backed new writing as a producer. Adam Lenson Productions created the Amplify fund to support the development of new British musical theatre. He later partnered with producer Katy Lipson on a development initiative aiming to commission a new musical every year.

Lenson made his own work on the fringe, the circuit of small-scale shows outside the main commercial theatres. That included the solo shows Is It Too Late Now To Say Sorry? and Anything That We Wanted to Be. The latter addressed his diagnosis with stage three malignant melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.

He authored the book Breaking Into Song, about the development of new musicals.

No details of funeral or memorial arrangements have been announced.
