Zverev seals year-end No. 1 as Alcaraz falls in Shanghai

Alexander Zverev will finish 2026 as men's world No. 1. The ATP Tour confirmed the honour on 12 October after Carlos Alcaraz lost at the Shanghai Masters. It is a first for German tennis.
Alcaraz fell 7-5, 7-6(7-4) to Belgium's Zizou Bergs in the third round on Monday. The match was played inside Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. The ATP Tour called it the biggest win of Bergs's career ATP Tour.
That result settled the year-end race, the battle to sit top of the rankings when the season closes. The ATP Tour announced Zverev had clinched ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours ATP Tour. Bergs moves through to the fourth round.
Alcaraz arrived in Shanghai as the second seed, the ranking slot that keeps the top players apart early in a draw. He never found a way through Bergs. Both sets turned on small margins. A single break of serve, winning the other player's service game, decided the first. The second went to a tiebreak, the first-to-seven shootout used at 6-6, which Bergs took 7-4.
The maths had looked impossible in January. Alcaraz started the year top with 12,050 points, ahead of Jannik Sinner on 11,500. Zverev was third on 5,110. Alcaraz and Sinner had split all eight Grand Slams in 2024 and 2025 between them BBC Sport.
Then the season shifted. Zverev won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open in June, then backed it up at the US Open. Neither run took him past Sinner, Alcaraz or anyone else in the world's top 10. Sinner has since been ruled out for the rest of 2026 with a knee injury.
Zverev will not go top in the weekly rankings until 2 November at the earliest. The year-end prize is already his. He entered Shanghai with a Tour-leading 58 wins in 2026, then earned his 60th by beating Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3.
The records tell the longer story. At 29, Zverev will be the oldest player to finish a year as No. 1 for the first time. He will be the first German to do it. He has now sat inside the top four continuously since March 2024.
That patience follows a hard stop. He suffered a serious ankle injury in the 2022 French Open semi-finals and missed seven months. Four years on, he held his nerve when the two players above him fell away.
What makes this stand out is the gap he has closed. He started more than 6,000 points behind. He ends the year with two Slams and nowhere left to chase.
