New songs shed billions of plays on Spotify's weekly Top 200 charts in the first nine months of 2026, as songs more than three years old took a larger share.

Music Business Worldwide published the analysis on 12 October 2026. It examined every weekly Spotify Top 200 chart in the United States and globally for the first 39 weeks of 2026, and the same 39-week stretches in 2024 and 2025. Music Business Worldwide

In the US, 25.6 billion streams were counted on those weekly Top 200 charts in the first 39 weeks of this year. Frontline music, the industry term for recent releases, claimed 57.4% of that total. The rest went to catalogue.

Globally, 98.6 billion streams were counted on the weekly Top 200 charts over the same period. Frontline music claimed 54.9%.

The drop in absolute plays was sharp. Frontline chart streams fell 25.4% year on year in the US and 24.8% year on year globally for the January to September period. That is 5 billion fewer plays in the US and 17.9 billion fewer plays globally than a year earlier.

MBW defined 'catalog' as songs released more than three years before each chart week. It said the definition mirrors the investor-facing definition used by Universal Music Group, one of the three majors alongside Sony and Warner.

The shift comes while overall listening is still growing. Luminate's 2026 Midyear Report found global music streaming was up 10% in the first half of 2026, with audio streams up 4.8% to 732.7 billion. Luminate

For listeners, this means the charts they see each week contain more old favourites alongside new releases. A weekly Top 200 ranks the 200 most-played songs. When catalogue takes more places and plays, fewer slots and streams are left for songs released in the past three years.

Spotify has pointed to the scale of its audience and catalogue. The company said almost two-thirds of all Premium music streams happen on Spotify, and that 3.5% of the world subscribes to Spotify. The full findings run to a 26-page special report, titled Catalog's Unprecedented Surge on Spotify's Charts in 2026. It is available exclusively to MBW+ subscribers. MBW said the analysis started as founder Tim Ingham's 'Tim's Take' email, also sent only to MBW+ subscribers.
