The Prince of Wales has hosted an informal game of cricket on The Mall outside Buckingham Palace in London.

The event was called 'Cricket on the Mall'. It took place on the broad ceremonial road that leads to the Palace in central London, with the Prince picking up a bat himself rather than watching from the sidelines, as reported by Hello! Magazine.

He played in a relaxed match alongside Greg James, Joe Root, Brian Lara and Jimmy Anderson. The five formed a team for the occasion. The game was informal in style, with the emphasis on taking part and rallying together rather than on formal competition or a serious scoreboard contest.

The match was staged as an Earthshot Prize event. The Earthshot Prize holds an annual awards night, and this year's ceremony is due in Mumbai in November. The London cricket game was organised in the lead-up to that night, using sport as a way to bring people together before the main awards programme.

The stated aim was to highlight the close bond between the UK and India. Cricket was the natural choice for that message. The sport is followed with passion in both countries, and playing it in such an open and recognisable London setting gave the idea a simple and visible form.

The choice of venue added to the fun. The Mall is normally reserved for state processions, ceremonial parades and big public events. Seeing stumps and bats laid out there, with Buckingham Palace as the backdrop, turned a place associated with formality into somewhere to play.

What makes this stand out is how accessible it felt. There was no pavilion or closed ground, just a famous street turned into a pitch for the afternoon. For a general audience, that is easy to picture, even if you have never watched a full match.

For fans, this means a chance to see the heir to the throne in sporting mode. The Prince, whose formal title on first mention is His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, is often seen at official engagements and ceremonies. Here the record shows him fielding, batting and laughing along with his teammates as part of the build-up to Mumbai.
