Apple HomeView: A Smart Home Hub That Leans on the iPhone

Apple announced the HomeView smart home hub on October 13, 2026 MacRumors. The unit has a 7-inch Liquid Retina display MacRumors and an A18 chip TechCrunch. Apple planned a mid-November release Bloomberg.

HomeView is a combined smart screen and speaker that shows personalized information from a user's iPhone or iPad Engadget. It looks like an enlarged Apple Watch but works as an in-home hub Engadget. The dependence is intentional. The display does not stand alone. It extends the phone.

The system uses recently used apps on the iPhone or iPad and acts as a control center for smart home devices through the Home app Engadget. It works with Apple Home Collection for live camera feeds and thermostat and lighting controls Engadget. In hands-on testing, HomeView worked with cameras, a door lock, and a thermostat from LG and a thermostat from Schneider Electric Engadget.

Siri on HomeView uses information from the user's iPhone for requests such as "play that song Jeff texted me about" Engadget. That type of request uses personal context, message history and links to media, rather than a generic voice command. Apple has said its Live Rewind and Siri Recap were planned to be available in beta in late 2026. Those features require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, which supports Apple's AI features.

HomeView includes a Safari recipe mode that formats ingredients and directions when a recipe meets Google's formatting standards Engadget. Recipes include inline timer shortcuts to set a timer on the display with a tap Engadget. Users can send a Safari recipe from an iPhone to HomeView by holding the phone near the display Engadget. For developers, the point is direct. Structured data decides how content appears.

Apple published a press release titled 'Meet Apple HomeView, a new way to enjoy entertainment and manage the home' Apple. The hub project was code-named J490. Apple has also planned to open Siri to rival AI services beyond its ChatGPT partnership, and planned to rebuild Siri as a built-in chatbot. That chatbot effort was code-named Campos and was planned for iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems.

Availability is geographically limited. Apple HomeView is not available for sale in the European Union Apple. Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU Apple.

The broader context here is design, not looks. Apple is not selling HomeView as a standalone assistant with a screen. It is selling it as an extension of the iPhone, with the Home app and Apple Home Collection accessories attached. In my view, keeping identity and recent app use on the phone eases hard technical work, while the hub handles display and steady home control. I have watched my own children ignore a smart display until it moved something from phone to shared screen without retyping. If that handoff and the personal-context Siri requests work reliably, it makes possible quieter home computing at a distance.
